During Wilco’s tour through Australia, Fastlouder was able to catch up with bassist John Stirratt. He proceeded to explain that he thought Wilco (The Album) was “more abrasive” and that the next one will be a lot more “jarring.” Stirratt stated, “We are in writing mode and we start that and the demos in our space which is sounding better and better as a studio. We are going to record quite a bit over the summer. We’ll do it in Chicago and maybe towards the end we might get to another locale, hopefully in some warm weather environment a la New Zealand in January.” The band are currently finishing up a tour in Europe and LP8 sessions may be pushed back due to Jeff Tweedy working on a forthcoming Mavis Staples album. Don’t worry though, a new record from Wilco is definitely in the works.
In the mean time, Wilco will being playing a few more European shows in September. Also, they will be curating and performing at the 3-Day Solid Sound Festival in North Adams, MA beginning August 13th. Jeff Tweedy will be playing a few solo festival dates throughout the summer as well.
Wilco has stayed pretty busy since the release of their eponymous album in 2009. Last year, the band toured extensively in support of new material, and it seems as though the guys aren’t quite finished with touring. This time, Jeff Tweedy and company will hit the U.S., Canada, Japan, New Zealand, and Australia. It’s not quite a full world tour, but they will be stopping in a few different countries, three of which did not receive visits from Wilco last year (Japan, New Zealand, and Australia). They will be receiving support from the bands Califone and Bahamas for various North American shows. Pitchfork Media cites a press release that states Wilco fans can expect “extended, varied sets exploring material from each of the accomplished Chicago sextet’s seven studio albums.”

Guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, engineer, producer, singer-songwriter and former member of Wilco, Jay Bennett, died early Sunday morning in Urbana, Illinois. He was 45 years old. The cause of death is unknown but an autopsy is being performed.
Jay Bennett is most well known for his role in Wilco from 1994 to 2001. Bennett departed from the band during the recording of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Conflicts between Bennett and front-man Jeff Tweedy are visible in the 2002 film I Am Trying to Break Your Heart: A Film About Wilco by Sam Jones.
Bennett’s last release was solo album entitled Whatever Happened I Apologize which is available as a free download. At the time of his death he was working on another solo album entitled Kicking at the Perfumed Air.
As huge fans of his work with Wilco including Being There, Summerteeth, and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, we are deeply saddened and overwhelmed by his death. This truly is a sad day for music.
Rest in peace Jay. You will be missed.
