Thom Yorke’s band now Atoms for Peace, will tour U.S. in the spring

You probably knew this already, but Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has another band. That band was just enigmatically known as Thom Yorke ????–until today. Now, we can finally start ascribing a name to Yorke’s side project, which is officially Atoms for Peace, named after a track on The Eraser, his solo album from 2006.

Turns out, with a new band name comes a few U.S. tour dates in/around major cities, along with their Coachella date in April. Instrumental hip-hop artist Flying Lotus will be opening for the band on all non-Coachella dates.

Atoms for Peace:

04-05 New York, NY – Roseland Ballroom *
04-06 New York, NY – Roseland Ballroom *
04-08 Boston, MA – Citi Wang Theatre *
04-10 Chicago, IL – Aragon Ballroom *
04-11 Chicago, IL – Aragon Ballroom *
04-14 Oakland, CA – Fox Theatre *
04-15 Oakland, CA – Fox Theatre *
04-17 Santa Barbara, CA – Santa Barbara Bowl
04-18 Indio, CA – Coachella

* with Flying Lotus

Thom Yorke mentions future collab with Madlib/Madvillain

It’s no secret that most of the band members in Radiohead are vocal fans of hip-hop. Check the “Office Chart” playlists that they occasionally post on Dead Air Space, and it’s easy to see their affinity for the genre. Likewise, respectable members of the hip-hop community reciprocate the love. We can’t say that without mentioning the Thom Yorke remix of the song “Gazzillion Ear” from the masked emcee’s most recent LP, Born Like This.

Oh, but Yorke is not stopping with DOOM. Yorke recently co-hosted Gilles Peterson’s BBC radio show and dropped hints that he’s been in talks to collaborate with influential hip-hop producer and Stones Throw Records resident Madlib. Details on the project were fuzzy, with Yorke citing time and schedule constraints as reasons why the project has not come together sooner. Reportedly, he already has some Madlib beats, and he told the radio host that a Madvillain remix can be expected soon (Madvillain is the collaboration between DOOM and Madlib).

This is exciting news for both hip-hop heads and Radiohead heads.

New Liars album gets remixed by Thom Yorke, Melvins

Liars must have earned the respect of nearly every important figure in the music industry. On their upcoming album, Sisterworld (due March 9) they have recruited some major names in music to do remixes for each of the 11 tracks. They have not leaked the names of everyone involved, but so far, we can expect remixes or reinterpretations from Thom Yorke, Blonde Redhead, Tunde Adebimpe (TV on the Radio), Melvins, Bradford Cox (Deerhunter/Atlas Sound), synth punk pioneer Alan Vega (Suicide), and legendary provocateurs Chris & Cosey (Throbbing Gristle).

Liars frontman Angus Andrew talked to Prefix Magazine a bit about the project. “[The collaborators] were asked to ‘re-interpret’ the song by any means necessary and the result is definitely the most exciting collaborative effort we’ve been involved in,” he said.

The remix album will be part of an expanded edition of Sisterworld, which is a two-disc set (disc one will be the main Sisterworld album, and disc two will be the remix disc). They will release a single on February 16 called “Scissor,” which you can download here from the Liars website.

The band has announced the North American Sisterworld tour, and more dates will be announced later. Check out the dates that have been given so far:

04.10 El Rey Theatre: Los Angeles, CA
04.14 Rock & Roll Hotel: Washington, DC
04.15 Bowery Ballroom: New York, NY
04.16 First Unitarian Church: Philadelphia, PA
04.17 Paradise: Boston, MA
04.18 Music Hall of Williamsburg: Brooklyn, NY
04.27 Slim’s: San Francisco, CA
04.29 Hawthorne Theatre: Portland, OR
04.30 Venue: Vancouver, BC
05.01 Neumos: Seattle, WA

Radiohead to record new album this winter

Radiohead
Happy Birthday to Thom as well!

Remember how Thom Yorke said Radiohead was going to take a break from recording albums? Think again. Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien told NME recently that the band will release a new album in 2010. It is doubtful that it will be a pay-what-you-want online release a la 2007’s In Rainbows, as O’Brien expressed a desire to make the album available physically.

“We love the artwork; that’s really important, the physicality,” O’Brien said. “And we all like vinyl. That’s not going to go away. I still like CDs as well. I got the Speech Debelle CD the other day – I nearly downloaded it from iTunes but I thought, ‘No. I want the physical thing.’”

O’Brien says the band will begin recording this Winter but did not give an estimate for a release date. As always, onethirtyBPM will keep you updated on the band’s progress.
