As previously reported, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor did indeed score David Fincher‘s The Social Network. Working with The Book of Eli‘s Atticus Ross, we have the first proof of that score as Sony just launched the official site for The Social Network. /Film has gathered the 46 new photos from the site if you want to check them out.

You can stream the track below via our player or download it here (right click + save as):

Reznor wasn’t kidding when he said it was “dark.” The score is minimal and brooding. I can’t wait to see how it fits into the film. If you haven’t already seen, Peter Travers said it was “the movie of the year that also brilliantly defines the decade.” Scott Foundas also had an extremely positive first review.

Only a few hours ago I got my New York Film Festival press accreditation and I’ll be seeing the film early Friday morning on Sept. 24th. It opens wide Oct. 1st.

What do you think of the first piece of music from The Social Network?

A mysterious website about a new musical project entitled How To Destroy Angels has appeared, and it has already been linked to Nine Inch Nails man Trent Reznor. No official announcement about who it involves has been made but the woman in the image certainly resembles Reznor’s wife Mariqueen Maandig; former singer of West Indian Girl and as many have pointed out the image is stylistically similar to the artwork of Nine Inch Nails’ last album The Slip.

Update: It is in fact Trent Reznor’s new side project. Trent and his wife will be releasing a six song EP this summer. Stay tuned for more info.
Most interestingly there is a 40 second clip, which is embedded below that certainly sounds Reznor-esque musically. A press release about the project informs us that there will be a six track self-titled EP set to drop this summer. Aside from that there is no other information, so for now speculation about the project continues. You can keep up to date through How To Destroy Angels’ Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube and Vimeo, which for now are lifeless (aside from the 40 second clip on Vimeo) but will hopefully yield some interesting information soon enough.

Even after Trent Reznor repeatedly stated that the Nine Inch Nails’ tour this year would be their final some people didn’t believe him, but now there is conclusive proof that Nine Inch Nails as we know them are no more.

All of NIN’s touring equipment will be put up for auction on eBay through the seller ningear over the coming weeks. The first twenty guitars of various makes and models are already online. Click here to check them out.

So if you were wondering what to get that special person in your life for Christmas (or, more likely, yourself), I think the ideal present just fell into your lap. If you can afford it.

During Nine Inch Nails “Wave Goodbye” tour, the band set out to play The Downward Spiral live for the first time front to back at Webster Hally NY. Unfortunately, Live Nation would not let them professionally record the show. Reznor however encouraged fans to bring their own cameras/recording devices – with an “open camera policy”. The fans over at The NIN Hotline & This Is On Us put together various fan recordings of the show. The result is an incredible HD video of the whole show, with many raw angles and great sound.

During the 2008 Lights In The Sky tour we began an open camera policy for stills and video during all NIN shows, inviting fans to capture the events with anything from a cell phone to a hi-def video camera. The results have been overwhelming, filling our own galleries with thousands of images and videos from every show, and inspiring a number of ambitious fansourced video projects within the NIN community. Some of those projects are starting to surface now, and we couldn’t be happier with the way the fans have organized themselves and created some truly impressive work.

On the recent Wave Goodbye tour, we were unable to professionally film the band’s performance of The Downward Spiral at Webster Hall, due to exorbitant fees requested by the LiveNation venue. Our open camera policy, however, remained in tact, and as soon as the show ended fans took matters into their own hands, organizing online to track down everyone who had filmed HD footage of the show. Now, only two months later, the group has released a polished, edited, downloadable DVD of the full Downward Spiral performance from Webster Hall. The entire thing has been recorded, edited, and distributed entirely by fans, and it’s the latest example of the amazing things fans will do when their creativity isn’t limited by outdated, misguided restrictions.

You can watch “The Downward Spiral: Live” in HD on this YouTube playlist. You can download it via torrent as a burnable DVD or an iPod/iPhone-friendly video from this page (click the question mark link on that page if you’re new to downloading with torrents).

We filmed all of the other final Wave Goodbye shows professionally, and you can expect to see that footage surface in some form or another in the future. In the meantime, we appreciate the efforts of The NIN Hotline, This One Is On Us, and everyone else who helped to immortalize the Webster Hall performance.

Photos and Videos by Brent Koepp

The farewell tour is one of the most worn-out clichés in all of rock. Whenever a band announces it is breaking up, suspicion always arises that these claims are being made merely to sell a few extra tickets and to generate excitement for the reunion tour a year later. Everyone from the Who to the Smashing Pumpkins has fallen into this trap at one point, and the Eagles even displayed enough self-awareness to dub one recent such trek the “Farewell Tour: Part I.”

With that said, I am inclined to believe Trent Reznor when he says that the current run of Nine Inch Nails club dates is the end of touring life for his alt-rock powerhouse. Since getting sober and releasing his 2005 comeback album With Teeth, Reznor has been touring and recording pretty much constantly, and in the process has set a sterling example for how a band can succeed on his level without a record label. For him to want to take a break after five years of nonstop work is understandable. He deserves it. Not only that, but Reznor got engaged earlier this year for the first time, and has expressed frustration that a life of constant touring has left almost no time to have a personal life. Reznor is well into his 40s, and the fact that his engagement coincides with his retirement from the road makes perfect sense.

And besides, Reznor has repeatedly stated that he does not want to wind up like Gene Simmons or Mick Jagger, continuing to hash out “Head Like a Hole” in basketball arenas well past the point of self-parody. He wants to quit while he’s ahead, and judging by NIN’s Sept. 2 show at the Hollywood Palladium (the first of four Los Angeles shows that will cap off the farewell tour), Reznor is quitting at the top of his game.

Even while battling a cold, Reznor was in terrific voice, leading his NIN bandmates (guitarist Robin Finck, bassist Justin Mendal-Johnsen, and drummer Ilan Rubin) through a wide-ranging two-hour set that ran the gamut from a start-to-finish performance of his classic 1994 album The Downward Spiral to more recent material from last year’s The Slip to a surprise guest appearance by Gary Numan.

NIN had already performed Spiral at a recent New York show, so it didn’t take long for fans to catch on when the band took the stage and tore into “Mr. Self Destruct.” As I wrote in an earlier column, the full-album performance is making a comeback, and The Downward Spiral is one of the best ideas to emerge from that trend. Put back into their original context, the live staples “March of the Pigs” and “Closer” felt fresh and new. This lean, stripped-down version of NIN lent itself well crushing versions of album tracks like “The Becoming,” “I Do Not Want This,” “Eraser,” and especially “Reptile.” Rubin in particular provided a level of rawness not seen since NIN’s earliest incarnations.

After closing the Spiral portion of the show with a predictably jaw-dropping rendition of “Hurt,” the band launched into a much looser set that drew heavily on 1989’s Pretty Hate Machine, 1991’s Broken, and last year’s The Slip. Despite apologizing several times for being sick, Reznor sounded great the entire night. The band was absurdly tight, nailing the stop-start riffing of “Terrible Lie” and the mechanical rhythms of “Suck.”

When Reznor initially announced this farewell tour, he hinted at the possibility of surprise guests. At earlier shows, he brought out Bauhaus frontman Peter Murphy to cover Joy Division. At the Palladium, he introduced ‘80s synth-pop icon Gary Numan, explaining that Numan’s Tubeway Army played an integral role in shaping NIN’s early sound. He then let Numan lead his band through terrific readings of “Metal” and “Cars,” before returning to the spotlight to close the set with raucous versions of “The Hand That Feeds” and “Head Like a Hole.”

It is difficult to imagine any NIN fan being disappointed by the shows Reznor is ending his 20-year run with. I’m hard-pressed to think of a time when he’s sounded better or more confident or led a sharper band. If this really is the end of NIN, Reznor is leaving behind a legacy of consistency, innovation, and class. Between his recent spurning of record labels, the extensive anti-scalping precautions taken at these last shows, the inspired openers he hand-picks (Mew and Queen Kwong both delivered killer warm-up sets at the Palladium), and the impossibly high level on which his band is performing, Reznor is going out of his way for NIN to make the best last impression possible.

Trent Reznor recently posted on NIN.com that they will be playing a group of small shows in August to end out NIN. Originally, it was believed that Bonnaroo would be the bands last US performance, but it Reznor explained they wanted to end it with a set of intimate shows.

Getting right to the point, we’re going to play a handful of shows in NYC, Chicago and LA starting August 22nd. They will be informal affairs in medium to small venues with longer set-lists, possible special guests, cool openers and other surprises. Upon reflection, the NIN/JA tour felt like we had to rush through sets due to a limited allotted set length and many shows were in daylight – it just didn’t feel right to end NIN that way. An offer to headline V-Fest in Toronto (being announced soon) set the idea in motion to play some FUN shows to end this up with. If we can get it together we’ll film these shows, too.In NYC we’ll be playing Bowery Ballroom, Webster Hall and Terminal 5. In Chicago, the Aragon Ballroom. In LA we’ll be at The Wiltern, The Henry Fonda, The Palladium and The Echoplex. These should be cool, unusual and unique shows and I hope you come out – this is it.So far, The Horrors will be joining us for some shows in NYC, Mew will be with us at other shows in NYC, Chicago and LA, and perhaps more.Details and ticket info will be announced shortly, so check back. Thanks,Trent

Anyway, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor took a series of questions voted on by readers in a 40-minute video interview by the popular news site Digg. Reznor addressed many topics, including his innovative approach to releasing music, the state of his long-shelved Tapeworm project with Tool singer Maynard James Keenan (don’t get your hopes up), and the prospects for a visual adaptation of his 2007 concept album Year Zero. You can view the whole interview after the jump.

Trent Reznor has built his entire career with Nine Inch Nails on the notion that he works alone, writing, producing, and playing nearly all of the instruments on every NIN record from 1989′s debut Pretty Hate Machine to 2008′s The Slip. Which is why fans were shocked when they learned that Reznor’s ninth studio album, Strobe Light, would be produced by hip-hop hitmaker Timbaland, best known for his groundbreaking work with Chris Cornell. Tim’s influence can be heard considerably on Strobe Light, as Reznor expands his sound to feature much more overt hip-hop overtones. The result may be offputting to longtime fans, but ultimately represents a bold and rewarding new direction for one of the most creative and prolific rock artists of the last 25 years, and could be his best album since 1999′s The Fragile.

Like much of the work Timbaland produces, Strobe Light is built on stuttering drum machines and spacey keyboards. Nowhere is this more effective than on the Dirty South-indebted “Clap Track Crack Slap.” Over a menacing synth hook, Reznor growls “I stepped on a crack, but then I got slapped, and everyone clapped and threw me in the tracks.” It’s classic Reznorian nihilism with a crunk twist. On “Even Closer” and “Still Hurts,” Reznor updates two of his most well-known songs with Timbaland’s production flourishes, and the new models blow the originals out of the water.

A major advantage for Reznor in using an outside producer is that he is granted full access to Timbaland’s star-packed rolodex. He brings in Jay-Z, Chris Martin, and Bono for the alt-rock posse cut “Everybody’s Doing It,” which features the triumphant refrain “Everybody’s doing it/so nothing can stop me now.” His collaborations with Sheryl Crow (“Pussygrinder”) and Alicia Keys (“Still Hurts”) establish his cred as a legitimate pop crossover star. Fergie and Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen provide strong harmonies on “Laid, Paid, and Played,” Reznor’s most unabashedly fame-celebrating song to date. The title of “Feel Like Being Dead Again” is a nod to Lil Wayne’s classic codeine ode “I Feel Like Dying,” and features Reznor free-associating over an inspired sample of A-ha’s “Take On Me.” Reznor revisits many of his most prominent lyrical themes, talking about being “on my hands and knees in the club” in the classic-Timbaland bounce of “Coffin on the Dance Floor”.

All over Strobe Light is the mark of an artist unwilling to stand still or look back on his past. With assistance from Timbaland, who is at the top of his production game throughout, Reznor boldly embraces modern urban music culture in creating what can only be called a club banger for the black-hearted.

When a photo surfaced last week of Nine Inch Nails auteur Trent Reznor and Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro in the studio, speculation began that Reznor would either be producing a new album by the recently reunited Jane’s or touring with Perry Farrell and Co. Reznor confirmed today in a blog post that a co-headlining world tour is in the works, although dates have not yet been set. His full statement can be read below the fold.

Towards the beginning of my career in Nine Inch Nails, our biggest break came in the form of an invitation to perform a series of shows with Jane’s Addiction. These performances essentially created and defined the term “alternative” rock in the US, created an ongoing festival franchise that is still thriving (Lollapalooza), set the stage for Nirvana to shift popular taste a few months later, and were really fucking FUN to play and attend – truly the best times I’ve had. The shows were epic. So epic, they propelled NIN to the “next level” (whatever that means), but caused Jane’s to implode. The band broke up at the end of that tour.

Fast forward to the present. Corporate rock STILL sucks. A friend tells me they saw the original Jane’s lineup play a tiny show in LA that was unbelievable. I break out my Jane’s records and am amazed by how vital they sound. These guys were the real deal and in this current climate mostly dominated by poseurs and pussies it was refreshing to hear something that sounded dangerous, volatile, beautiful and SINCERE.
Emails were sent, phone calls were made, dinner was arranged, ideas were discussed and the next thing I know we’re in the studio experimenting. We laugh, we get to know each other, we cry, we yell, we almost quit, we record LOTS of guitar solos, we discuss, we actually begin to all communicate, we yell some more, we become FRIENDS, we laugh again and we do some great things. I get to see first hand why they broke up all those years ago but I also get the chance to see four distinct personalities that become an INCREDIBLE band when they’re in the same room.

In NIN world, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of our first releases. I’ve been thinking for some time now it’s time to make NIN disappear for a while. Last year’s “Lights in the Sky” tour was something I’m quite proud of and seems like the culmination of what I could pull off in terms of an elaborate production. It was also quite difficult to pull off technically and physically night after night and left us all a bit dazed. After some thought, we decided to book a last run of shows across the globe this year. The approach to these shows is quite different from last year – much more raw, spontaneous and less scripted. Fun for us and a different way for you to see us and wave goodbye. I reached out to Jane’s to see if they’d want to join us across the US and we all felt it could be a great thing. Will it work? Will it resonate in the marketplace? Who knows. Is there big record label marketing dollars to convince you to attend? Nope.
Does it feel right to us and does it seem like it will be fun for us and you? Yes it does.
Look for tour dates soon and I hope to see you out there.

Trent

Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has uploaded onto his blog a photo of himself in the studio with Jane’s Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro. This update comes on the heels of clues on Reznor’s Twitter page that he is in the studio for a project unrelated to NIN. The nature of this project is currently unknown, but this photo with Navarro is fueling speculation that he is producing new music for the recently reunited Jane’s, or that the two alternative-rock giants are planning some shows together. Reznor is strongly rumored to be plotting a summer tour, and has been confirmed to play Manchester, TN’s Bonnaroo festival in June.

Nine Inch Nails auteur Trent Reznor today unveiled his hinted-at holiday gift to fans, in the form of a whole ton of video footage from his recently-completed Lights in the Sky tour.

Earlier in December, Reznor informed fans via a post on his blog that a planned 3D concert shoot with James Cameron’s film crew fell through due to legal drama with NIN’s former record label, Interscope, leading most fans to believe that the group’s technologically groundbreaking Lights in the Sky tour would not see any kind of video release.

In his holiday update on Dec. 18, he hinted strongly that he had a surprise in store for fans. Today, he finally revealed his gift:

The internet is full of surprises these days.
I was contacted by a mysterious, shadowy group of subversives who SOMEHOW managed to film a substantial amount (over 400 GB!) of raw, unedited HD footage from three separate complete shows of our Lights in the Sky tour. Security must have been lacking at these shows because the quality of the footage is excellent.

If any of you could find a LINK to that footage I’ll bet some enterprising fans could assemble something pretty cool.

Oh yeah, you didn’t hear this from me.

The three concerts (Dec. 5 in Victoria, Dec. 7 in Portland, and Dec. 8 in Sacramento) were posted in BitTorrent form on the official NIN forum by NIN Art Director Rob Sheridan, along with a message encouraging fans to download the footage and create a DVD.
Fresh off wrapping up his successful Lights in the Sky tour and objecting to his music being used for torture, Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has posted the following holiday update on his blog:

The LIGHTS IN THE SKY era has come to a close, and I’d like to once again thank you for your support. I am very proud of what we pulled off – it was an immense amount of work and worth it all.
I’d like to thank Josh and Alessandro for being an integral part of this for the last few years and I wish them all the best.

No rest for the wicked here, though. We start rehearsing the new band/format first thing next year and as I mentioned, we’ll be announcing some final waves of dates. North America, UK/Europe, Pacific Rim and elsewhere.

Oh yeah – we may have a small holiday gift for you soon. Check back.

No idea what that “small holiday gift” is, but he’s given cryptic warnings like that before, and the result has usually been an online album, a la Ghosts I-IV or The Slip. Could it be some kind of live album/video as a consolation prize for the failed Lights in the Sky DVD? Or more volumes of the instrumental Ghosts? We’ll have to wait and see.

Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor has reacted to a recent recent MSNBC article that revealed that the US government has been using music from groups such as NIN, Rage Against the Machine, and AC/DC to torture prisoners at Guantanamo Bay.

In a brief posting on his official website, Reznor promised to take any legal action possible against the government for using his music in this way, and to donate any profits from a potential lawsuit to charity.

Trent Reznor’s full statement:

It’s difficult for me to imagine anything more profoundly insulting, demeaning and enraging than discovering music you’ve put your heart and soul into creating has been used for purposes of torture.
If there are any legal options that can be realistically taken they will be aggressively pursued, with any potential monetary gains donated to human rights charities.
Thank GOD this country has appeared to side with reason and we can put the Bush administration’s reign of power, greed, lawlessness and madness behind us.

Trent Reznor

When you don’t have a record label, you have to do focus groups somehow. Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor has posted a survey asking fans to tell him their listening habits, where they get their news, and how they get their music, among other things. And don’t worry about having to lie about getting your music on P2P sites either. Trent himself famously had an OiNK account, and posted his latest album, The Slip, as a free download on nin.com. Chances are he won’t care. In a letter to fans preceding the survey, Trent hints at the possibility of prizes for those who complete the survey, and offers a free downloadable video of the band performing The Slip track “1,000,000” at Red Rocks this summer to participants.

Message from Trent Reznor regarding the survey:

Hello everyone.

I’d like to thank everyone for a very successful year so far in the world of Nine Inch Nails. I’m enjoying my couple of weeks off between legs of our Lights In The Sky tour and got to thinking… “wouldn’t it be fun to send out a survey to everyone that’s shown interest in NIN?” Well, that’s not exactly how it went, but regardless – here it is. As we’ve moved from the familiar world of record labels and BS into the unknown world of doing everything yourself, we’ve realized it would benefit us and our ability to interact with you if we knew more about what you want, what you like, what you look like naked, etc.I know it’s a pain in the ass but we’d truly appreciate it if you’d take a minute and help us out. As an incentive, everyone who completes the survey will be able to download a video of live performance from this most recent tour (and I know what’s going through your little minds right now: “I’ll just grab this off a torrent site and not have to fill out the survey!!!” and guess what? You will be able to do just that and BEAT THE SYSTEM!!!! NIN=pwn3d!!!)
BUT
What if we were to select some of those that DO complete the survey and provide them with something really cool? I’m not saying we’ll ever get around to it, but if we did maybe something like signed stuff, flying someone to a show somewhere in the world, a magic amulet that makes you invisible, a date with Jeordie White (condoms supplied of course), you
know – something cool. See, you’d miss that opportunity AND be a cheater. Do the right thing – help us out. You’ll feel better.

Thank you and I’ve had too much caffeine this morning,
Trent”

You can take the survey here.

In other NIN-related news, a sequel to 2007’s concept album Year Zero is in the works, possibly for release by the end of 2008. Reznor is also in talks with HBO about a possible miniseries based on the album. Nine Inch Nails are currently on tour promoting the 2008 self-released albums Ghosts I-IV and The Slip.
