The Flaming Lips set dates for U.S. tour

Back in early February, news broke that The Flaming Lips would be serving as sub-headliners for this year’s Bonnaroo festival, which probably made Flaming Lips fans wonder if the band would limit themselves to the Bonnaroo appearance or if they would be planning a more extensive tour. Massive Attack announce North American tour

British duo Massive Attack have not toured North America in a while–not since 2006, in fact. Four years later, they’ve announced a brief visit to North America during the month of May to support their fifth album, Heligoland. They will supposedly wrap up at the Sasquatch Festival–unless they plan to extend their tour ten days or so, add a few more cities, and make a stop at Bonnaroo. Wishful thinking!

Martina Topley-Bird will serve as the opening act. Considering she provides vocals on the track “Babel” for the new album, perhaps she will join the group onstage.

05.07 Toronto, ON: Sound Academy
05.09 Toronto, ON: Sound Academy
05.11 New York, NY: Terminal 5
05.12 New York, NY: Terminal 5
05.18 Los Angeles, CA: Wiltern Theater
05.19 Los Angeles, CA: Wiltern Theater

The Hold Steady Announce New Album and Tour

Brooklyn rockers The Hold Steady have today announced the release of their fifth album Heaven Is Whenever, the follow up to 2008’s Stay Positive.

The news comes shortly after former keyboardist Franz Nicolay announced he would be leaving the band.

The press release on the band’s official website reads:

“The album was produced by Dean Baltulonis, who engineered the band’s ‘Almost Killed Me’ and produced ‘Separation Sunday,’ and was recorded at Dreamland Recording Studios in Upstate NY and Wild Arctic Studios in Queens, NY, with mixing also happening at Wild Arctic.

Singer Craig Finn says ‘Heaven Is Whenever’ is about “embracing suffering and finding reward in our everyday lives.” Piano and keys take a backseat to guitar on the new record, which also gets production help from guitarist Tad Kubler.

Recorded in several smaller sessions spread out over a long period of time, the songs on ‘Heaven Is Whenever’ received the benefit of being tested on the band’s recent tours. As Finn says this allowed them to “see what was working and what wasn’t. I believe this record benefits from us working at a more deliberate pace.”

The album is due out on May 4th in the USA via Vagrant Records and a day earlier in Europe on Rough Trade.

The track list of Heaven Is Whenever is:

01. The Sweet Part of the City
02. Soft in the Center
03. The Weekenders
04. The Smidge
05. Rock Problems
06. We Can Get Together
07. Hurricane J

Franz Ferdinand begin writing fourth studio album

Scottish dance punk group Franz Ferdinand released their third LP, Tonight: Franz Ferdinand, last year to reception considerably more tepid than that of their first two blockbusters, 2004’s self-titled debut, and 2005’s Alexander Rodchenko-inspired You Could Have It So Much Better. Despite the large gap between LPs two and three, it seems the band is already preparing new material. In an interview with the BBC, frontman Alex Kapranos discussed writing sessions that had taken place at the house of the band’s guitarist, Nick McCarthy. “We’ve been writing some things, and trying to do things in a different way again,” Kapranos said.

The band is also now wary of press and promotion as a means of building up false hype. “Before the last record, I talked far too much about it as we had the ideas and I made a vow that I wasn’t going to say anything about what we are actually doing until we’ve done it, and then wait about another three weeks,” Kapranos added. So don’t expect some kind of iamamiwhoami build-up, then.

Franz Ferdinand are headlining the Future Music Festival in Australia which begins in Brisbane on February 27.

Titus Andronicus get ready for their “Monitour”

A true Do-It-Yourself punk ethic is hard to find these days, but the guys in Titus Andronicus have got it down. With their new civil war-themed album due March 9 (XL Recordings), Titus Andronicus have announced a lot–A LOT–of North American dates for an upcoming tour, deemed the “Monitour” (cheekily inspired by the title of their next album). The tour will span from the beginning of March to the end of April, and there won’t be any glamorous Hilton hotel stays for these guys. The DIY approach comes in here: they are asking fans for night-to-night accommodations. Frontman Patrick Stickles writes, “Accommodations need not be anything special at all – a floor and a ceiling are our only two requirements, though beds/couches/beanbags/etc. are always nice.” Email the guys at titusandronicustheband@gmail.com if you’d like to let the band crash at your place.

They are also hoping to fill in the empty days in their schedule, as long as you can help them get booked. Check out the dates below (via P4K):

Radiohead’s Phil Selway announces Mediterranean solo tour

Radiohead drummer Phil Selway has recently announced that he’s going on a solo tour of the Mediterranean regions of Europe. Apparently this shouldn’t exactly blindside in-the-know Radiohead fans, seeing as we got news last year of a Selway solo album in the works. The album is rumored to feature collaborations from Lisa Germano, Sebastian Steinberg of Soul Coughing, and Glenn Kotche and Pat Sansone of Wilco. It is possible that the album will be released under the moniker Boybrain. According to Radiohead’s publicist, Selway is not using the name Boybrain. Interesting. Collaborator Lisa Germano will open for Selway during the tour.

If we have any readers from the Mediterranean, perhaps these tour dates will be of some interest:

The band’s website also lists some tour dates. Below, we list them for your convenience. The Canadian June bill looks particularly tantalising.
