Austin group The Strange Boys announce fall tour

Although the sad end of summer approaches, not everything is as depressing as it seems. Austin, Texas’ The Strange Boys are beginning a month-long fall tour with Gentleman Jesse and His Men, giving fans of timeless rock n’ roll something to look forward to.

Comparable to the 13th Floor Elevators, the Strange Boys bring a sound to the year 2010 that is familiar to fans of psychedelic/garage rock n’ roll as well as incorporating new and current trends in this genre. Signed to In the Red records, it is easy to see how this band fits in well; the label is also home to Black Lips and Mark Sultan.

Opening for Gentleman Jesse and His Men, this tour seems to be one to follow if the lack of recent garage is getting you down. Having started their tour on September 2nd at the Saturn Bar in New Orleans, LA, the bands will be on tour until the 3rd of October, ending up in Memphis, TN. Dates can be found here on MySpace. For those of you who aren’t being graced with the presence of these bands in your hometowns, don’t fret; The Strange Boys formed in 2003 and have been on tour almost entirely since their formation, you’ll probably see them much sooner than later.

Very special Caribou live double album on the way

Caribou, music project of one Mr. Dan Snaith, have had a good year. The album Swim, released early this year, was a critical hit and they’ve toured the globe since, and they’re still going.

To celebrate all this Snaith is releasing a live album entitled Vibration Ensemble, which was recorded at The Flaming Lips-curated ATP New York last September. This was something of a special show because the band was bolstered to a 15-piece by guests including Kieran Hebden (Four Tet), Luke Lalonde (Born Ruffians), Koushik Ghosh (Koushik), a five piece horn section, four drummers and Marshall Allen, the leader of the Sun Ra arkestra.

This should be a very special and different album, and appropriately the release will be only on double vinyl and the album will be available only at Caribou’s shows. Accompanying the album will be a video of the show on DVD.

The tracklist for Vibration Ensemble is below.

A1. Every Time She Turns Round It’s Her Birthday
A2. Hendrix With Ko
B1. Sandy
B2. Skunks
C1. Barnowl
C2. Melody Day
D1. Brahminy Kite

The video for “Fuck You” by Cee-Lo Green, one of our favourite songs of the year, has been released. For now you can only view it on facebook, by heading to the man’s official facebook page and clicking “Like.”

It features a child Cee-Lo singing and dancing with toy trucks, the real Cee-Lo, and a great song, so you’re going to want to check it out.

Sufjan Stevens announces new album The Age of Adz

It seems a certain Mr. Sufjan Stevens is on something of a roll. Less than a week after releasing a surprise EP (if a 60 minute set of songs can truly be called an EP) he has now announced the release of his new album The Age of Adz!

Here are the important details about The Age of Adz: 1. “Adz” is pronounced “Odds.” 2. It is to be released on CD on October 12th and LP on November 9th. 3. If you pre-order either format right now from here you will receive an MP3 download of the full album on September 28th.

The official press release on Asthmatic Kitty’s website description tells us that

“the new album sounds nothing like the All Delighted EP (although it shares similar themes of love, loss, and the apocalypse). Nor is this new album built around any conceptual underpinning (no odes to states, astrology, or urban expressways).

We can say it shows an extensive use of electronics (banjos and acoustic guitars give way to drum machines and analog synthesizers), and an obsession with cosmic fantasies (space, heaven, aliens, love), to create an explicit pop-song extravaganza, augmented by heavy orchestration, and maybe even a few danceable moments. Enjoy Your Rabbit meets the BQE. But with songs. Verse, chorus, bridge, backbeat. Gated reverb. Space echo. Get your boogey on.

Try not being excited after reading that.

Sufjan has put out a few random songs and collections of songs in the last couple of years, but The Age of Adz is set to be the true follow up to his 2005 opus Illinois, so it has quite a lot to live up to. If anyone can fulfill the requirements it’s Sufjan, and we couldn’t be more excited, especially as it is effectively only a month until the album is set for release.

Tracklist:

01 Futile Devices
02 Too Much
03 Age of Adz
04 I Walked
05 Now That I’m Older
06 Get Real Get Right
07 Bad Communication
08 Vesuvius
09 All for Myself
10 I Want To Be Well
11 Impossible Soul

77 Boa Drum Will Get DVD Release

The insanely ambitious, and now annualized, 77 Boa Drums concert will be getting a proper DVD release this fall. Out September 7th on Thrill Jockey Records, the documentary will feature various Youtube videos along with the professional footage of Jun Kawaguchi and his crew.

Unfamiliar with the now three year old concert? Well 77 Boa Drum was a concert held in the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park in Brooklyn, featuring 77 drummers all collaborating at the same time. The group included drummers for such bands as The Boredoms (whom the project was created by), Gang Gang Dance, Pixeltan, and Holy Fuck. You can check out the whole list over at the concert’s Wikipedia page. Maybe I’m just a bit of a percussion junky, but I’m really happy to see this concert on DVD. Enjoy the trailer below.

Full details of new Brian Eno album emerge

A few weeks ago the first details of a new Brian Eno album to be released on Warp Records emerged. In fact those were the only details we had, but it was enough to cause some excitement; this is, after all, the Brian Eno we’re talking about.

Today Brian Eno’s site was updated with the full details of this new album, entitled Small Craft On A Milk Sea and you can see the beautiful sepia-toned desolate cover art above.

The album, which was recorded with other musicians Jon Hopkins and Leo Abrahams, is being released on November 2nd in North America and 15th November in the UK.

There are several different packages to choose from. Aside from the usual CD or download option, for those who are true Eno fans there is both a Limited Edition and a Collectors’ Edition version. For the full details of what each package includes and to pre-order the album in whichever format takes your fancy head to the official Small Craft On A Milk Sea page now.
