If you’ve been losing sleep over the recent news that Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler quit, then you’re probably not me. As it happens you have nothing to worry about as Tyler crashed his long-time left-handed right hand guitarist Joe Perry’s gig Tuesday night at Irving Plaza, effectively dispelling rumors that the Armageddon soundtracking rockers won’t soldier on.Like many other aging rock bands, Aerosmith only appear to like each other on stage for the sake of the barrels of money being dumped into their bank accounts. The rumors were apparently based on an interview with Tyler in which he suggested that his next project would be a solo effort. Upon hearing this Perry rather passive-aggressively and publically jumped to the conclusion that Tyler had left Aerosmith.
Why couldn’t he bother calling Tyler and saying what’s up? a friend with whom he has shared a lifetime of music, money, and models? tensions must be high.
Fortunately, the guys have an animal instinct for capitalizing on things like harbored feelings of resentment. Amid the baseless and pointless rumors, Tyler came on stage during the encore of Perry’s gig and performed a cracking rendition of Aerosmith’s nu-metal spawning hit “Walk This Way”. Judging from the rapturous applause after their performance, it’s safe to say the boys might have won over a few Joe Perry fans for their old band.
